Cleaning Tips
When cleaning your knife…Do not EVER put it in the dishwasher!
Commercially available knives that are labeled “dishwasher safe”—even those with wooden handles—have typically been treated with injected chemicals or plastics that will stand up to pressured jets of scalding water and corrosive cleaners.
Austin Legacy Knives are hand crafted by more traditional methods. While each knife’s components have been treated and/or stabilized by modern means, the hand polishing and precisely laid lines between wood and steel can quickly be destroyed by a machine. A dishwasher puts stress on the blade and can enlarge, warp, or dull the color of the handle.
So, don’t be afraid to use your knife. Get it as dirty, bloody, or fishy as you wish. But wash it by hand.
Don’t soak it. Don’t put it in the dishwasher.
All that is needed to clean your knife properly is a small amount of soap (Dawn works well), a soft sponge, and a bit of light scrubbing. When you are finished, immediately dry the knife thoroughly—especially the handle—and place it in a safe spot.
